Taylor leads England towards high ground

England 222 for 4 (Taylor 74*, Bairstow 37*) trail Pakistan 234 by 12 runs

As the third Test hardened into a battle of wills and wiles, England were hauled into a position of relative strength by a maiden Test half-century from James Taylor. His unbeaten 74 helped take England to within touching distance of Pakistan's first-innings 234 at the close and bound together a hitherto porous middle order on a pitch that yielded every run grudgingly.

It was hard going but England were determined not to squander the gains achieved by their bowlers on Sunday. A surface that had threatened mayhem - as least by recent UAE standards - on the first day was increasingly cowed, a slow outfield providing a further obstruction to scoring. This England team may not appear adept at grafting but they dutifully buckled down to add 218 runs from the allocated 90 overs.

A girl found dead on the neighbour's roof in night

The parents of the innocent little child Arfa left her in bed sleeping before heading out to attend a religious program on Saturday night. When they returned late in the night, they found the girl missing. They searched for their young girl everywhere throughout the night but to no avail.

The next day Arfa’s dead body was found wrapped in a piece of sheet on the rooftop of a neighbour’s house.

Police have ruled out the possibility of abuse and assured that the culprits will soon be apprehended.

Evidence was collected with the help of mobile forensic lab and later Arfa’s body was sent for post mortem.

The incident has sent a wave of fear in the neighbourhood while the area residents have expressed lack of trust in the police.

They said a similar incident had taken place here three years ago in which a young boy was kidnapped and killed. Till today police have no clue as to who committed this crime, they regretted.

Anderson, Broad skittle Pakistan for 234

England's bowlers produced an excellent all-round display to dismiss Pakistan inside the first day in Sharjah, having been put into the field for the third time in the series. Official News: ISIS taken responsibility of Russian Plan Crash

A militant group affiliated to Islamic State in Egypt has claimed responsibility for shooting down the Russian passenger plane as it flew through Sinai peninsula on Saturday.

The claim was circulated by supporters on Twitter and also published on the Aamaq news website, which has been used on a semi-official basis by Islamic State to circulate propaganda in the past.
There is no confirmation from any other sources that the plane crashed as a result of terrorist activity - and Egyptian officials were quick to rule that out as a cause of the crash earlier this morning.

A report in July by military expert IHS Janes said Islamic State affiliate group Wilayat Sinai had propaganda videos in which militants are seen with a type of man-portable air defence systems (SA-18 Igla MANPADS), which can reach about 10,000 feet.

The airliner was said to be travelling at least 31,000 feet, before it made a steep descent as it crashed.

Pakistan main weapon injured before 3rd test

Courtesy: Cricinfo

Pakistan fast bowler Imran khan has been ruled out for the third and final Test against England at Sharjah on Sunday, after injuring his bowling hand during fielding practice on Friday.

Imran, 28, was an unsung hero of Pakistan's victory in the second Test at Dubai last week, in which he claimed four wickets - two in each innings - as England's batting unraveled at key moments of each innings.

However, he was taken to hospital after splitting the webbing on his right hand while attempting to catch a ball at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, and after receiving stitches in the wound, he will now be out of action for ten days.

"He injured his hand while fielding session and was taken to hospital," Intikhab Alam, Pakistan's team manager, told ESPNcricinfo. "He is out for ten days after four stitches were applied at his webbing."

Imran is considered something of a lucky charm by Pakistan, having never yet finished on the losing side in any of his seven Tests since his debut against Australia at Dubai in October 2014.

Now that he has been ruled out, however, Rahat Ali, the left-arm fast bowler who played in the first Test at Abu Dhabi, is the obvious replacement.

However, on a surface that has proven conducive to spin in the past, Pakistan also have the option of selecting an additional spin bowler in Bilal Asif, whose bowling action was today cleared by the ICC following biomechanical testing.

Asif's bowling action was reported during the ODI series against Zimbabwe on October 5 and he underwent testing in Chennai a fortnight later. However, the ICC have now announced that his elbow has been found to be well within the 15-degree limit for all deliveries, and he is clear to resume playing.

However, Asif's selection alongside the current spin incumbents, Yasir Shah and Zulfiqar Babar, would leave a heavy burden on the shoulders of Wahab Riaz, whose fast-bowling exploits at Dubai earned him the man-of-the-match award.

BCCI asked Indian Government for series against Pakistan

As per our news

BCCI has written to Indian Govt. and asked for the permission of series against Pakistan. BCCI has showed positive response to PCB by apologizing about the incident in Mumbai. Now BCCI has said that series is dependent on the permission of Government.

BCCI chairman added that we should separate politics from cricket but this series is only feasible if our government allows us to conduct it.

Remember, PCB and BCCI has mutual agreement on series in 5 years on the issue of Big 3.

Bradley Cooper says 'transparency' needed over Hollywood wage gap

Bradley Cooper has spoken of the need for "transparency" to help close the gender pay gap in Hollywood.

Cooper's American Hustle co-star Jennifer Lawrence made headlines this month when she wrote about her anger at getting paid less than her male counterparts.
"Putting a microscope on it and having the impact that it's had is a great thing," Cooper said.
"Obviously transparency is necessary in order to help that equilibrium occur."
The star was speaking to the BBC after the European premiere of his new film Burnt in London's Leicester Square.

Cooper plays a head chef trying to regain his reputation in the capital after a downfall caused by drug addiction.
The film reunites him with his American Sniper co-star Sienna Miller, who plays a talented chef taken on by Cooper's character.
Asked about the pay gap issue, Miller said: "It's a conversation that's happening on a global scale in every industry - and it's time that there is transparency and equality. It's insane that there isn't."
Cooper and Miller were given culinary advice on the film, which was mostly shot in London, from British celebrity chef Marcus Wareing.
Cooper - who worked in kitchens when he was growing up - said that Wareing taught him the importance of "being able to stay steady under pressure".
Miller said: "I can fillet a turbot! The hardest thing was the intensity of the cooking - it's hot and I got burnt."
Burnt, directed by John Wells, opens in the UK on 6 November.

Will Karan Johar Not Invite Fawad Khan to Mumbai?

With a political party now targetting Pakistani actors in Bollywood, two major banners are in a dilemma as to how to finish their shooting schedules and then continue with the films' promotions. Since, the political party has specifically mentioned two major Pakistani stars Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan who are working in films produced by Karan Johar and Farhan Akhtar.
Word is that Karan Johar will now refrain from inviting Fawad Khan to Mumbai for any more work related to his films. Fawad has already finished shooting for KJo's Kapoor and Sons in India and is currently also shooting for Ae Dil Hai Mushkil in London.

“He won’t take the risk of bringing Fawad to Mumbai for any shooting or promotional activities. Karan has already been in trouble with the same political outfit earlier for referring to ‘Mumbai’ as ‘Bombay’ . He can’t take the risk again,” says a source in a bollywoodlife.com article.

As for Mahira, the source says, “Chances are the producers Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani may shoot Mahira’s portions in Dubai or some other location away from Mumbai where most of Raees has been shot.”

Pakistan's Bilal Asif cleared of suspect bowling action

30 year old spinner- bilal asif
Pakistani upcoming all rounder Bilal Asif's bowling action has been cleared after it was found to be within the legal limits, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said this on last friday.

The bowling action of the
spinner was reported as suspect during the third one-day international against Zimbabwe at Harare on October 3.

He underwent a biomechanical test of his action in Chennai, India on October 19.

"At the assessment (in Chennai), it was revealed that the amount of elbow extension in all of Asif's deliveries was well within the 15-degree level of tolerance permitted under the ICC regulations," said an ICC release.

The news comes as a relief for the newcomer as his career was in danger of being derailed by questions over his action.

Asif only burst onto the international scene in June this year when he was selected in Pakistan's Twenty20 squad for the tour of Sri Lanka.

But he only made his international debut on the tour of Zimbabwe, claiming 5-25 in only his second game during which on-field and television umpires as well as the match referee reported his action.

Pakistan team manager Intikhab Alam said the news came as a big relief for the team as well as for the player.

"We were confident that his action would be cleared," Alam told AFP. "Its a good news for Asif as well as the team."

Asif is in line for a Test debut in the third and final match against England which starts in Sharjah from Sunday after paceman Imran Khan was ruled out with a hand injury.

He was included in the squad of 16 as cover for spinners Yasir Shah and Zulfiqar Babar.

The ICC launched a crackdown against chuckers in June last year, during which as many as 12 bowlers were reported.

Among them were Pakistan's Saeed Ajmal and Mohammad Hafeez alongside Bangladesh's Sohag Gazi, New Zealand's Ken Williamson, Sri Lanka's Sachitra Senanayake and Tharindu Kaushal, and Zimbabwe's Prosper Utseya and Malcolm Waller.

Hafeez was banned from bowling for 12 months after his action -- cleared in April this year -- was reported for a second time in July.

PCB wants Misbah to delay his retirement from test cricket

PCB has asked Misbah-ul-Haq to keep retirement plans on hold and play on through Pakistan's tours of England and Australia next year. Pakistan are scheduled to tour England for four Tests in 2016, and then to Australia for three Tests in the 2016-17 season. Misbah will be 42 next year.

"We have told him to delay his retirement for a year if he is thinking on those lines," Shaharyar Khan, the PCB chairman, told media persons in Lahore. "We feel his presence as captain and senior player will be invaluable to the team for the Test tours to England and Australia next year."

Misbah confirmed to ESPN cricinfo that Shaharyar had spoken to him. Earlier this month, he had hinted that the series against England in the UAE - which Pakistan currently lead 1-0 with one Test left to play - might be his last, particularly since the proposed series against India in December looked unlikely to go ahead.

"I have been considering so many factors as it's a very hard decision, in fact one of the toughest ones to take," Misbah had said. "So in the next one-and-half months I will be analyzing myself as to how far I can go. I will see how much I can contribute in for the team, I will see if my passion remains the same or I start losing interest in the game. Sometimes it's not about fitness, it's about how much interest you have in the game and I don't want to be a liability. So whatever the decision you will know soon."

Misbah, 41, is Pakistan's most successful Test captain, with 19 wins. He is retired from the shorter formats, but has shown no signs of waning form or fitness in the five-day game. He averages 56.75 in his 41 Tests as captain, all of which have come since his 36th birthday, and has made scores of 3, 51, 102 and 87 in his four innings so far in the series against England

Shane Warne came to met yasir shah

Shane Warne shares spin tips with Yasir Shah

Legendary Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne Thursday joined Pakistani cricketers at a practice session in Sharjah and praised spinner Yasir Shah for his bowling talent, Samaa reported.

“He is a best spinner in the world,” said Warne while exclusively speaking to Samaa, adding that he and Shah worked on bowling techniques.

According to Samaa correspondent Warne spent nearly two hours with Yasir Shah at the shared spin bowling tips with the fast-rising Pakistan spinner.

Warne, who was in UAE on a promotional tour, says he is interested in preparing Shah for the Cricket All Stars.

Warne and Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar are organising three Twenty20 matches for veteran cricketers in United States next month.

Himself a great of the game who took 708 Test wickets -- second only to Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan -- Warne is a great admirer of Shah.

Shah, who took eight wickets to help Pakistan win the Dubai Test against England in Dubai on Tuesday, started bowling leg-breaks after watching Warne on television.

BCCI made apology to PCB

Finally Decision by BCCI was shown by Chairman Mr. Shehryar khan

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in a letter to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Thursday expressed regret over the cancellation of talks between Shaharyar Khan and Shashank Manohar.

“We have received a letter from the BCCI expressing regret over what happened in Mumbai on October 19,” Amjad Hussain, PCB’s director of media operations, told Dawn.

The BCCI, in its letter, said that they have approached the Indian government for the approval of a bilateral series between the two traditional rivals.

Shaharyar Khan, along with a three-member PCB delegation, visited India to discuss with BCCI president Shashank Manohar to take a final decision whether India was ready to play the series as per the MoU signed last year.

However, members of Indian extremist party Shiv Sena party sabotaged the scheduled meeting at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, when around 40 to 50 individuals stormed the venue of the meeting prior to its start.

Australian football team book flight to Dhaka

DHAKA: The Australian Football Team have booked their flights for a World Cup tie in Dhaka which was thrown into doubt by the cancellation of an Australian cricket tour over security fears, Bangladesh's football federation said Wednesday.

The Australian federation had flagged up their concerns over the November 17 tie in the Bangladeshi capital to football's world governing body FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation.

But the Bangladesh Football Federation said its Australian counterpart had now forwarded the team's flight details in an email, including a list of players and other officials planning to travel with them.

“They sent us a list of 75 players, officials, journalists and other delegates. We've also received the list of match officials from FIFA,” Abu Nayeem Shohag, the BFF's general secretary, told AFP.

His comments came shortly after the Socceroos named their squad for both the match against Bangladesh and a home qualifier against Kyrgyzstan to be played in Canberra on November 12.

Shohag said Bangladesh would ensure the safety of the Socceroos and had received security advice from FIFA.

Reports in Australia said the Socceroos were awaiting guidance from FIFA about whether they would be expected to fulfil the game in Dhaka.

Australia's cricketers had been due to play a two-Test series in Bangladesh this month but the tour was scrapped in the wake of the killing of two foreigners, attacks claimed by the Islamic State group.

Announcing the cancellation, Cricket Australia's chief executive James Sutherland said an independent security assessment had concluded there was a “risk of terrorism in Bangladesh targeting Australian nationals”.

Bangladesh's government has however rejected the idea that Islamic State is operating in the mainly Muslim but officially secular nation.

The match is crucial for Australia who are second in their group — four points behind leaders Jordan but with a game in hand — and therefore can ill afford to forfeit three points by failing to fulfil a fixture. Australia thrashed Bangladesh 5-0 in September's home qualifier in Perth.

warne wants to bowl along with yasir shah

Legendary Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne on Tuesday said he would like to train with fast-rising Pakistan spinner Yasir Shah in the nets, a wish Pakistan management welcomed.

Warne, on a promotional tour to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), said he believes Yasir is a world-class bowler.

“If I could find some time this week, I would love to go down and have a bowl with Yasir, because I am trying to prepare for the Cricket All Stars next week as well,” Warne told UAE daily The National.

Himself a great of the game who took 708 Test wickets — second only to Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan — Warne is a great admirer of Yasir.

Yasir, who took eight wickets to help Pakistan win the Dubai Test against England in Dubai on Tuesday, started bowling leg-breaks after watching Warne on television.

Warne met Yasir in Adelaide during the World Cup earlier this year and passed on some useful tips to the Pakistani spinner.

Warne and Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar are organising three Twenty20 matches for veteran cricketers in the US next month.

The Australian spinner said he is keen to have nets before the matches in the US.

“I am trying to get as much practice in as I can. I might not be that welcome down in the England camp, so I might have to try the Pakistan camp to have a bowl,” Warne said.

“I think he [Yasir] is a wonderful bowler. From what I have seen of this [Dubai] Test match, he has got all the toys, I just think he gets a little impatient.”

Pakistan team manager Intikhab Alam welcomed Warne’s reported request.

“No one has approached us as yet,” Intikhab said. “But if someone does then Warne is welcome because its a common practice that greats pass tips to youngsters and it will be a kind gesture.”

The eight official FIFA presidential candidates

LONDON: With Monday's deadline reached, here are the profiles of the eight officially declared candidates for the FIFA presidency:

Prince Ali bin al Hussein

The 39-year-old brother of Jordan's King Abdullah was a member of his country's special forces, specialising in parachute jumps.

The prince was on the FIFA executive from 2011 until this year when he first challenged Sepp Blatter for the presidency.

Prince Ali championed the cause of allowing women to play football in a hijab.

He has repeatedly demanded greater transparency within FIFA and promised to increase the share of revenues sent back to the national associations.

He has condemned the “backroom deals” that he says are one of the biggest causes of FIFA's long-standing troubles.

The prince has been one of the main advocates of releasing the Garcia report into the 2010 votes that gave the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar respectively.

Michel Platini

One of the greatest footballers of all time and until he was implicated in a Swiss criminal investigation into FIFA, Michel Platini is one of the sport's most skillful politicians.

After being co-chairman of France's 1998 World Cup organisation, he became president of UEFA in 2007 and has since been re-elected twice.

But the Frenchman's 90-day suspension while FIFA investigates a 1.8 million euro ($2 million) payment from the world body without a written contract has seriously hit the chances of the man who was once hot favourite.

Platini, 60, made his name as a sports administrator by pressing for football's riches and decision-making to be spread between members.

Jerome Champagne

The 57-year-old was a French diplomat in Oman, Los Angeles and Brazil before becoming a protocol advisor for the 1998 World Cup organisers.

He joined FIFA in 1999 and rose to become deputy secretary general under Sepp Blatter, leaving in 2010. “I am not ashamed of the FIFA years,” he said.

Though not a footballer, Champagne was a freelance journalist for the magazine France Football.

Champagne had tried to challenge Blatter in the election this year but could not get the required five signatures from national associations to enter.

He has vowed to bring in greater transparency, stronger ethical standards and modernise the world body's administration.

David Nakhid

The mystery candidate in the FIFA race, Nakhid, 51, was captain of Trinidad and Tobagao and played club football with Grasshoppers in Switzerland, Waregem in Belgium and New England Revolution in the United States.

His main administrative post has been running his own chain of football academies.

Nakhid said it is time for football's power to be moved away from Europe and that it will need a former player to reform the world body.

“I cannot be reckless. I am committed to transformation that is fair and even-handed and will deal with all or any breaches and improprieties,” he said.

Tokyo Sexwale

The South African anti-apartheid campaigner, who entered the race on Saturday, wants to make history by becoming the first African to head football's governing body in its 111-year history.

A former politician and one of his country's wealthiest men Sexwale, 62, was jailed alongside Nelson Mandela.

He served 13 years of an 18-year jail term on Robben Island on terrorism charges.

A member of South Africa's 2010 World Cup bid team he serves on FIFA's anti-racism and anti-discrimination committee, likening racism to “a monster that is trying to infiltrate sporting fields”.

He is also a FIFA media committee member.

Shaikh Salman bin Brahim al Khalifa

The soft-spoken Bahraini royal took over an Asian confederation in turmoil in 2013 after Mohamed bin Hammam was kicked out in disgrace, but he now enjoys an iron grip on the body.

Enjoys strong backing from Kuwaiti powerbroker Sheikh Ahmad al Fahad al Sabah, one of the most influential figures in world sport and a major player in both FIFA and the Olympic movement.

This year, Shaikh Salman was re-elected unopposed for a full, four-year term and became a FIFA vice president into the bargain.

But he has been dogged by allegations that he was complicit in Bahrain's harsh crackdown on pro-democracy activists in 2011, charges he denies.

Gianni Infantino

The 45-year-old Swiss lawyer joined UEFA in 2000 and became general secretary in 2009.

Multi-lingual, Infantino's original role was to deal with legal, commercial and professional football matters. He was subsequently appointed as director of legal affairs and club licensing division in 2004.

He worked on fostering close contacts with the European Union, the Council of Europe and governmental authorities.

Prior to joining UEFA he had a lot of experience working in sport.

He had been an advisor to various football bodies in Italy, Spain and Switzerland before then working as the general secretary of the International Centre for Sports Studies at the University of Neuchatel.

Musa Bility
President of the Liberian Football Association, Bility's candidacy is something of surprise.

He is one of a select band of Africans to stand for the presidency following current acting FIFA head Issa Hayatou in 2002, and Sexwale this time around.

“If we are to change football, then we have to make sure that those [that] have been running FIFA for the last 20-25 years have nothing to do with it,” the 48-year-old Bility told the BBC after announcing his candidature.

United star Rooney granted testimonial

LONDON: Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney will have a testimonial next season after a campaign by supporters to honour the England striker's long service to the club.

Rooney will play in a testimonial match for a Manchester United XI against a yet-to-be-named opponent at Old Trafford on August 3, 2016.

Details of the players and managers who will be involved on the day are expected to be revealed over the next few weeks.

The 30-year-old has vowed to donate all the profits from the match to the NSPCC, Alder Hey Childrens' Hospital, Claire House Hospice, and the Manchester United Foundation through the newly-formed Wayne Rooney foundation.

Rooney's representatives said United awarded the England captain a testimonial following a meeting between “like-minded individuals and Manchester United fans” who wrote to executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward asking that a testimonial be awarded following the player's 11-year spell at the club.

“I would like to thank everyone involved in making this testimonial become a reality,” Rooney said. “Most of all I want to thank the fans for all their incredible support for me and the team since I joined the club.”

The match night will obviously be special for me and my family but I hope it will be a night of celebration for all involved and that we can also deliver one or two surprises.

“Most of all I hope the fans will come out in force and help raise as much money as possible for these amazing charities, all of which are very close to my heart for different reasons.”

Since joining United from Everton in 2004, Rooney has won the Premier League five times, the Champions League once and the League Cup twice.

Rooney has also gained a host of individual accolades and is now just 13 goals short of Bobby Charlton's all-time United scoring record, having already broken his record England goal tally this season

“I am delighted that United fans will be able to celebrate Wayne's amazing years at the club in this way,” Woodward said.

“From his sensational debut hat-trick to the latest of his 236 goals, he has been a central figure in what has been one of the most successful periods in the club's history.”

Three women say Saudi prince abused them at Beverly Hills mansion

LOS ANGELES: Three United States (US) women claim a Saudi prince assaulted them and held them captive during three days of sex-and drug-fuelled partying at a Beverly Hills mansion.

The unidentified women, who have filed a civil suit in Los Angeles (LA) against Majed Abdulaziz Al Saud, 29, say they were hired by the prince as housekeepers in late September.

The suit, filed last Thursday, alleges that the prince terrorised the women and made sexual advances.

At one point, he also ordered the staff, including security guards, to strip by the pool.

When one of the women pleaded with him to stop, he allegedly yelled: "You're not a woman! You're nobody! I'm a prince and I'll do what I want and nobody will do anything to me."

The women also claim they saw the prince engaging in sex acts with another man and sniffing a white powder they believed to be cocaine.

"Al Saud has violently threatened and sexually assaulted his employees and publicly shamed these innocent women in the public eye," the women's attorney Van Frish told AFP on Monday.

"This is yet another example of the use of gross wealth and power to exert emotional and physical abuse on those more vulnerable."

The prince's lawyer could not immediately be reached for comment.

Frish said his clients' ordeal ended when someone called the police after hearing a woman unrelated to the case screaming as she she tried to scale the wall of the property.

The prince was arrested for allegedly trying to force that woman to perform oral sex on him.

But citing lack of evidence, authorities in LA said last week they would not pursue felony charges against Al Saud in that case. He could still face misdemeanour charges.

Frish said that during his trip to the US in September, the prince had also abused several women during a stop in New York.

Many members of Gulf monarchies own mansions in posh Beverly Hills and it is not the first time one of them has had a run-in with the law.

A member of Qatar's royal family — Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Thani — was questioned by Beverly Hills police in September after a video surfaced showing a yellow Ferrari he owned speeding through stop signs and past pedestrians.

Al Thani, a well-known figure in international racing circles, denied he was driving the car and claimed diplomatic immunity before leaving the country.

Warner gives thumbs up for first New Zealand Test

MELBOURNE: Australia opening batsman David Warner will test out his thumb in the domestic Sheffield Shield competition this week ahead of the opening Test against New Zealand.

Warner broke his thumb on tour in England and after a long stint on the sidelines will finally get to shake off some rust for New South Wales against South Australia from Wednesday.

Warner said the thumb was still ginger and likely to be for the rest of his career, having previously suffered a few knocks on it at the crease.

“I think I got hit against India in Brisbane on the same thumb last season as well and the pain is always going to be there,” Warner told reporters in Sydney.

“It is about me getting through that pain. You speak to any wicketkeeper in the world — they are playing with broken fingers so I am not complaining at all.

“Unless I cop another one on the thumb while I am practising or batting out in the middle that is the only thing that will hinder my selection for the first Test.

“Two weeks ago the doctor said to me come three or four days before the first Test it should be completely healing.”

Warner will be new captain Steven Smith's deputy in the three-Test series against New Zealand, which starts in Brisbane from Nov 5.

He will also be one of the few experienced batsmen left in the Test team after the retirements of fellow opener Chris Rogers, former skipper Michael Clarke and all-rounder Shane Watson.

Their replacements are yet to be bedded down, with Joe Burns, youngster Cameron Bancroft and Usman Khawaja among the candidates vying for a top order spot.

Warner would not be drawn on his preferred opening partner but his former team mate Rogers anointed Burns, who played two Tests against India during the last home summer, as his preferred successor.

“Joe has been around for a little while and Cameron has had one good season,” Rogers told state radio.

“I'd like him to start off the season and do well again and then show it is not just a one-off.

“Burns played in the Test summer last year, was unlucky not to get into that Ashes squad, and now there is another chance for him to come back in.

“For me, there is a pecking order, and he's the next one.”

Iran has sent more military advisers to Syria: officials

TEHRAN: An Iranian official says the Revolutionary Guard has sent more military advisers to Syria to help President Bashar al-Assad in the fight against insurgents.

General Hossein Salami, the Guard's deputy leader, says this has led to more Iranian deaths in the conflict. Salami didn't give any specifics for the Iranian death toll or for the number of troops dispatched.

Salami spoke to state television on Tuesday. He says Iranian forces are also trying to mobilise volunteers in Syria to help Assad push back rebels, though he did not say if those included Western-backed rebel groups fighting in Syria.

Along with Russia, Iran is a key Assad ally and has provided his government with military and political backing for years. Tehran, however, denies the presence of Iranian combat troops in Syria.

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's 'A Girl in the River' shortlisted for Oscar nomination

After Jami's Moor made it to the long list of Academy Award nominations, acclaimed filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's documentary A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness has been shortlisted for Oscars nominations in the category of Best Documentary - Short Subject. The documnetary has been nominated with 9 other films in this category.

A Girl in the River, which is a joint production of Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy (SOC) Films and Home Box Office (HBO) follows the life of an 18-year-old girl who is a survivor of an honour killing attempt. Honour killing is a pressing issue in Pakistan as more than a 1000 women fall prey to this practice each year, usually at the hands of their own family members.

The film, which brings to light the plight of oppressed women, is very close to Sharmeen herself.

“A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness is a film that resonates with me deeply. It's a film about the kinds of choices we women have in the world and how our lives are impacted by the decisions taken by others,” said Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.

The film has been jointly produced by journalist Tina Brown and documentary producer Sheila Nevins.

This is not the first time that Sharmeen's work has caught the attention of The Academy. She became the first Pakistani to win an Oscar for her documentary Saving Face in 2012. One of her recent documentaries Song of Lahore, in which she shares directorial credits with Andy Shocken, received a standing ovation at Tribeca Film Festival. She has also won an Emmy award for her documentary Children of Taliban.

The film is set to air on HBO next year.

Beef ban: Indian guest house removes 'beef' from menu after 'hardliner' complaint

NEW DELHI: A complaint about "beef curry" being served at the official state guest house of Kerala in Delhi sent a large team of policemen to the place on Monday evening, reported NDTV.

The police said they responded immediately to the complaint to prevent any "trouble".

The police team remained at the Kerala House for several hours and spoke to the staff, who said that only buffalo meat was being served as "beef", which is not illegal.

A senior police officer, Jatin Narwal said, "We dealt with the matter with necessary alertness and took our position. The objective was to ensure that law and order is not disrupted."

"It was a preventive measure. The police went to the canteen and informed the staff of the complaint, but did not collect any samples from the canteen," another police officer said.

Reports say the Kerala House has stopped serving buffalo meat for now.

The caller had claimed to be from a fringe right-wing group.

The complaint was reportedly made by an activist of the Hindu Sena, which was involved in an ink attack last week on Jammu and Kashmir lawmaker Engineer Rashid, over his beef party in Srinagar.

Processed meats rank alongside smoking as cancer causes – WHO

Bacon, ham and sausages rank alongside cigarettes as a major cause of cancer, the World Health Organisation has said, placing cured and processed meats in the same category as asbestos, alcohol, arsenic and tobacco.

The report from the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer said there was enough evidence to rank processed meats as group 1 carcinogens because of a causal link with bowel cancer.

It places red meat in group 2A, as “probably carcinogenic to humans”. Eating red meat is also linked to pancreatic and prostate cancer, the IARC says.

The IARC’s experts concluded that each 50-gram (1.8-ounce) portion of processed meat eaten daily increased the risk of colorectal cancer by 18%.

“For an individual, the risk of developing colorectal cancer because of their consumption of processed meat remains small, but this risk increases with the amount of meat consumed,” said Dr Kurt Straif, head of the IARC monographs programme. “In view of the large number of people who consume processed meat, the global impact on cancer incidence is of public health importance.”

The decision from the IARC, after a year of deliberations by international scientists, will be welcomed by cancer researchers but it triggered an immediate and furious response from the industry, and the scientists it funds, who rejected any comparison between cigarettes and meat.

“What we do know is that avoiding red meat in the diet is not a protective strategy against cancer,” said Robert Pickard, a member of the Meat Advisory Panel and emeritus professor of neurobiology at Cardiff University. “The top priorities for cancer prevention remain smoking cessation, maintenance of normal body weight and avoidance of high alcohol intakes.”.

But the writing has been on the wall for ham, bacon and sausages for several years. The World Cancer Research Fund has long been advising people that processed meat is a cancer hazard. It advises eating products such as ham, bacon and salami as little as possible and having no more than 500g a week of red meat, including beef, pork and lamb.

Prof Tim Key, Cancer Research UK’s epidemiologist at the University of Oxford, said: “Cancer Research UK supports IARC’s decision that there’s strong enough evidence to classify processed meat as a cause of cancer, and red meat as a probable cause of cancer.

“We’ve known for some time about the probable link between red and processed meat and bowel cancer, which is backed by substantial evidence.

“This decision doesn’t mean you need to stop eating any red and processed meat. But if you eat lots of it you may want to think about cutting down. You could try having fish for your dinner rather than sausages, or choosing to have a bean salad for lunch over a BLT.”

The statement from the IARC, published as an article in the journal Lancet Oncology, substantially toughens the line, especially against processed meat. But while cancer scientists are concerned about the risks of eating too much meat, some nutritionists maintain that the extra risk is relatively small and that meat has other benefits.

Dr Elizabeth Lund – an independent consultant in nutritional and gastrointestinal health, and a former research leader at the Institute of Food Research, who acknowledges she did some work for the meat industry in 2010 – said red meat was linked to about three extra cases of bowel cancer per 100,000 adults in developed countries.

“A much bigger risk factor is obesity and lack of exercise,” she said. “Overall, I feel that eating meat once a day combined with plenty of fruit, vegetables and cereal fibre, plus exercise and weight control, will allow for a low risk of colorectal cancer and a more balanced diet.”

Prof Ian Johnson, emeritus fellow at the Institute of Food Research, also said the effect was small. “It is certainly very inappropriate to suggest that any adverse effect of bacon and sausages on the risk of bowel cancer is comparable to the dangers of tobacco smoke, which is loaded with known chemical carcinogens and increases the risk of lung cancer in cigarette smokers by around twentyfold.”

The North American Meat Institute said defining red meat as a cancer hazard defied common sense.

“It was clear, sitting in the IARC meeting, that many of the panellists were aiming for a specific result despite old, weak, inconsistent, self-reported intake data,” said Betsy Booren, the institute’s vice-president of scientific affairs. “They tortured the data to ensure a specific outcome.

“Red and processed meat are among 940 agents reviewed by the IARC and found to pose some level of theoretical ‘hazard’. Only one substance, a chemical in yoga pants, has been declared by the IARC not to cause cancer.

“The IARC says you can enjoy your yoga class, but don’t breathe air (class 1 carcinogen), sit near a sun-filled window (class 1), apply aloe vera (class 2B) if you get a sunburn, drink wine or coffee (class 1 and class 2B), or eat grilled food (class 2A). And if you are a hairdresser or do shift work (both class 2A), you should seek a new career.”

'Virtual reality' for mice to aid neural research

A tactile, virtual reality (VR) system for mice has been created by researchers at the HHMI Janelia Research Campus in Virginia, USA.

The system uses a pair of movable walls to "tickle" the whiskers on each side of a mouse's face. By moving the walls in the shape of a virtual tunnel the mice can be tricked into thinking they are inside the real thing.
The team hope that the research will eventually help us understand our own brains better, including diseases such as Alzheimer's.
By using VR systems like this the research team say they "can get more data and higher quality data from each animal and thereby reduce the number of animals we need to use in experiments".
BBC Click's Stephen Beckett spoke to researcher Nicholas Sofroniew about the system

At least 100 people killed in Afghanistan and Pakistan – reports

A 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck major cities of Pakistan, including the northern areas on Monday, leaving at least 105 dead and scores injured due to building collapses, landslides and stampedes.

The earthquake struck the country at 2:09pm today (Monday).

Forty minutes after the first earthquake, an aftershock of 4.8 magnitude was reported in the same area. Aftershocks are expected to continue in the affected areas.

The magnitude of today’s earthquake is close to the previous earthquake of 2005, but the destruction was more widespread then due to the shallow epicentre of the quake.

The earthquake in 2005 was at a depth of 26 km, while today’s earthquake was at a depth of 212.5 km, according to analyst Faheem Zaman.

At least 100 people have been killed in the earthquake. These include 24 in Afghanistan and 76 in Pakistan.

The death toll could climb in coming days because communications were down in much of the rugged Hindu Kush mountain range area where the quake was centred.

Cancer Drug Could Be Baldness Remedy Too

Drugs developed to fight cancer and rheumatoid arthritis might work as creams to stimulate hair growth —offering a potential baldness cure, researchers reported Friday.

While cancer treatments are usually associated with hair loss, some specialized drugs called JAK inhibitors can actually help hair grow.

Angela Christiano and colleagues at Columbia University have been testing them as treatments for a rare form of hair loss called alopecia areata. This condition is caused by the immune system's mistaken attack on hair follicles, and the drugs work by suppressing inappropriate immune responses — that's why they help rheumatoid arthritis and some forms of blood cancer that involve immune cells.

"The surprise was when we started using the drugs on alopecia areata patients, when we used them topically the hair grew back much faster and more robustly than it did orally," Christiano told NBC News.

"That really got us thinking how that can be. It's a little counter-intuitive."

What they found was the drugs were affecting the hair follicles directly. JAK, the compound that the drugs suppress, puts hairs into a "resting" stage. "It's actually promoting the resting state of the hair follicle. The inhibitors … allow the hair to enter the hair cycle," Christiano said.

When they rubbed the compound onto the skin of bald mice for five days, new hair sprouted within 10 days, the team reported in the journal Science Advances.

"The hair that came in came in beautifully and in a few weeks and very thickly," Christiano said.

"There are very few compounds that can push hair follicles into their growth cycle so quickly," she added. "Some topical agents induce tufts of hair here and there after a few weeks, but very few have such a potent and rapid-acting effect."

There are several Food and Drug Administration-approved JAK inhibitors, including ruxolitinib, or Jakafi and tofacitinib, sold under the brand name Xeljanz.

Because they suppress the immune system, leaving patients vulnerable to infections, it would be dangerous to use them to correct something cosmetic like male pattern baldness.

But applying such drugs topically would be far safer, Christiano said.

"Male pattern hair loss follicles are stuck in the same state where these drugs seem to work," she said.

Delivering it on the skin also seems to get more of the drug into the hair follicles, she said.

"Columbia University has filed patent applications relating to the discoveries reported in this paper, which are being commercialized through Vixen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., of which Dr. Christiano is a founder," the university said in a statement.

"One of the reasons it's so difficult to develop drugs for hair is we can't grow hair in a petri dish," Christiano said.

"Also, there isn't a good rat or mouse model of male pattern baldness." Drugs on the market to grow hair were all discovered by accident — Propecia was found to grow hair as a side-effect of treating enlarged prostates, and Latisse, sold to grow eyelashes, was discovered as a side-effect of a glaucoma treatment

Lack of sleep linked to risk factors for diabetes, heart disease

People who get less than six hours of sleep a night may be more likely to have risk factors that increase their odds of diabetes, heart disease and strokes, a Korean study suggests.

This combination of risk factors - including high blood sugar, high cholesterol, extra fat around the midsection, high blood pressure and excess amounts of fats in the blood - is known as metabolic syndrome.

“The 'short' sleepers should be aware of the risks of developing metabolic syndrome, which could lead them to suffer from life threatening and chronic diseases,” lead author Dr. Jang Young Kim of Yonsei University in South Korea said by email.

Kim’s team followed about 2,600 adults for more than two years and found that participants who didn’t get at least six hours of sleep a night were 41 percent more likely to develop metabolic syndrome than individuals who got six to eight hours of shuteye.

The findings are drawn from two lifestyle surveys that included questions about sleep habits. The surveys were administered once between 2005 and 2008 and again sometime between 2008 and 2011. Study participants also underwent medical exams and shared their medical history.

After an average follow-up of 2.6 years, about 560 people in the study, or 22 percent of participants, developed metabolic syndrome, according to the results in the journal Sleep.

Short sleep duration was linked to about 30 percent increased risk of high blood sugar and excess belly fat, as well as 56 percent higher odds of hypertension, compared to those who slept longer.

One shortcoming of the study is its reliance on participants to accurately recall and report on their sleep habits, medical conditions and lifestyle behaviors, the authors acknowledge. It also lacked data on the quality of sleep.

Still, the findings are consistent with other studies that have found an association between sleep duration, cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome, said Kristen Knutson, a sleep researcher at the University of Chicago who wasn’t involved in the study.

“The strength of this study is that it is a prospective study, which means short sleep was associated with the development of metabolic syndrome,” Knutson said by email. “This is important because the sleep duration was measured before the people had the disease.”

To avoid the ill effects of insufficient sleep, patients should take a close look at their daily routines and make sure they allow enough time in their schedule for rest, Knutson said. Some things like time for work, school or childcare may not be optional, but other things like time for television or movies might be replaced with more rest.

“We don’t know yet if it is possible to reverse the effects” of too little sleep, Knutson added. “Still, adopting a healthy lifestyle which includes appropriate sleep, a healthy diet and sufficient exercise will be beneficial to your health.”

Scientist eats, drinks and paints simultaneously

London: Scientists from Imperial College London have developed computer software that enables a person to control a robotic arm to paint a picture using just the movement of their eyes.

The researchers say the technology demonstrates a potential use for robots to help people extend their range of abilities and do more than one task at a time.

At the college's Brain and Behavior Lab, engineers have taken a robotic arm and devised a system for it to be used as an extension of the human body. Instead of following a set of computer commands, the robot arm is guided by a tracker that follows the direction of the eyes, with an algorithm translating the path of the user's gaze into commands that control the robotic arm.

On Wednesday (October 14), in what the team says was quite possibly a world first, a researcher used the technology to paint a picture while simultaneously eating a croissant and drinking coffee. Post graduate student Sabine Dziemian said the intuitive computer program meant that even when her hands were otherwise occupied she could still accurately control the robotic arm.

"In general it's very intuitive because I don't have to think about commands or something like this. I simply think about where I want to draw or which color I want to take. And by thinking, a person usually looks at that color. So I also then look at that color and the robot goes there because it detects my eye movements and where I'm looking, and it has the co-ordinates exactly so it goes there directly. So I don't have to think a lot about this when I'm controlling it," said Dziemian.

The resulting painting is, admittedly, rudimentary. But the exercise demonstrates how the technology could be implemented into everyday life to literally give users an extra pair of hands.

Led by Dr. Aldo Faisal from the Departments of Computing and Bioengineering, the researchers developed sophisticated computer software to decode the eye movements of the user into actions.

"Six years ago we started to look at eye movements. It's a very natural, intuitive means by which we can operate devices. And so over the course of the years we developed systems that decode our intention of action from our eye movements. So you can imagine, for example, when you want to grab a cup; you will look at that cup before you grab it. And you will look in a specific way so you can judge where it is and how wide you have to shape your grip. And so we're developing algorithms that decode this intention from eye movement and we're then translating them into action," Faisal told Reuters.

The technology could have a massive impact on the lives of people suffering from debilitating conditions like multiple sclerosis, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or Parkinson's Disease. Faisal said the next step is to 'augment' the body so that everyone can multi-task with the aid of eye-controlled robotics.

"Now we're not just talking about restorations of the body, but really about augmentation of the body. So, we are developing technology that is not only helpful in restoring the ability of people to move, but really technology that can give even able-bodied people an extra pair of hands; and extra pair of arms," he said.

"Imagine, for example, that you can paint and eat and drink at the same time, imagine holding a baby and preparing its food while you do it all simultaneously. So there are whole new ways we can think about interacting with the world."

For Dziemian, who took part in much of the research, the software translates her eye movements into actions with very little effort - even while she was eating and drinking.

"I think the level of concentration is not very high because it's something very intuitive. I didn't need a lot of time to learn how to use it. Actually, using it one time was enough to know how to control it completely," she said.

Faisal said that their program is non-invasive, compared to other areas of research that are focused on implanting technology directly into people's brains. He said the "very invasive, very expensive, (and) very risky operations that people have to undergo" would be unnecessary with their system.

"We are following a non-invasive approach where you don't have to put technology into the head, but you can just, you know, you can just take it on and off like a pair of glasses. That's the level of technology that we want to offer to people because we think it's much more acceptable, it's lower risk and, if we can operate technology with the same level of intuition, we think it will have a better sense, better opportunities for success."

The researchers are now looking for partners to commercialize the technology, while working on making the software even more intuitive so that it becomes a seamless interface between man and machine.
